The ultrafast pH jump methodology

Photoactivatable caged compounds can be used to induce a fast changes in proton concentration in aqueous solutions. In this work we have used o-nitrobenzaldehyde as a photoactivatable caged proton compound. The photolysis of o-nitrobenzaldehyde has been well characterized in the past.
We have detected the structural volume changes and the heat release accompanying the photoinduced reactions by means of time resolved pulsed photoacoustics.
